Car Air Conditioners

The main purpose of a car air conditioner is to either heat or cool the air inside the car in order to make it more comfortable. Typically, car air conditioners have vents on both the driver and passenger sides: this means that both the driver and the passenger can operate the air conditioning independent of each other in order to regulate the temperature in their own space. This is obviously advantageous.

Car Air Conditioning

A further advantage of having car air conditioning installed is that in the event of the windscreen becoming steamed up due to the car being parked in low thermal conditions, air conditioning enables warm air to clear the screen more efficiently than in a vehicle without any air conditioning installed.

There are two significant limitations to the benefits of car air conditioning. The first is that powering the air conditioning involves using more power and consequently makes the vehicle less fuel efficient. The second is that air conditioning can also be expensive to repair in the event or it malfunctioning or needing parts replacing. In the event of an air conditioning system malfunctioning.

A vehicle air conditioning system can often be referred to as an AC system (standing for air conditioning system). Often, in cars that have the facility to toggle the air conditioning on and off using one button, this switch is represented as “A/C”.

Installation

Air conditioning systems often come as standard in modern cars, although they can be retro-fitted into existing models that did not originally have air conditioning systems as standard. The number of these cars still on the road that do not originally have air conditioning systems fitted is in decline however as progress in the automotive industry means that the majority of new vehicles on the road have car air conditioning fitted as an industry standard.

Refrigeration

Additionally in vans, air conditioning can also be installed to provide refrigeration in order to provide facilities to transport goods that need to remain frozen or refrigerated. This can often involve fresh foods such as seafood, meat, poultry or similar.

Maintenance

Air conditioning systems do also need to be properly maintained in order to continue to operate effectively. In addition to repair when the product breaks or malfunctions, there are various maintenance procedures that need to be undertaken when using and running an air conditioning system in a car.

Refrigerants

Car air conditioning systems are relatively inexpensive to maintain since they are reasonably efficient and the refrigerants involved (such as R134a, R12 and CO2) in cooling or warming the air inside the car do not run out quickly. However, over time air conditioning systems can need maintenance, service or even repair as a result of work being done on them.
